The External View (EV) format is a format specifically created for the purposes of proofing and outsourcing translation work, though the latter is only supported by Déjà Vu X3 Workgroup.
External View files contain a table or list of segments. This table or list has all the source segments from the project in one column, and the corresponding target segments in another, as well as some more information depending on the specific EV format chosen. These files can be opened with a variety of different programs, allowing their recipients to read them comfortably and, where supported, to edit them, as well as adding comments, questions, etc. The edits and corrections can then be incorporated back into the original project, where supported.
Déjà Vu X3 Professional allows the creation of EV files for proofing only, so EV files can only be exported from projects that are already completed. The formats currently supported in Déjà Vu X3 Professional for External View files are:
- RTF (Rich Text Format, suitable for Microsoft Word and other word processors)
- HTMLnote
Déjà Vu X3 Workgroup allows you to create EV files from projects that are not yet complete, or even projects that have not been translated at all. These EV files can be used for proofing translations already made or to deliver translation work in a efficient way to translators who don't yet have Déjà Vu X3. The formats currently supported in Déjà Vu X3 Workgroup for External View files are:
- RTF (Rich Text Format, suitable for Microsoft Word and other word processors)
- HTMLnote
- Trados RTF (a simple Trados Workbench project with only the translatable text included)
- XLIFF
